Pilates Classes & Reformer Pilates at David Lloyd Meridian
If you’ve been looking for a new workout routine that can give you a good balance of flexibility, strength, muscle tone and help for a few aches and pains, Pilates may be the answer.
On top of being an incredible way to build core strength, increase mobility and enhance feelings of wellness, scientific studies show Pilates can do everything from improve sleep and better your posture, to lift your cognitive function and boost immunity.
Other benefits include:
Mat Pilates targets different parts of your body, particularly the core, while also contributing to improved mental wellness by increasing energy levels and reducing stress. In this form of Pilates, you do the exercises on a mat, sitting, standing and lying down, sometimes with the use of simple equipment such as a resistance band, blocks and balls.
If you take part in a mat Pilates class in an exercise studio, your instructor will guide you through a series of movements designed to enhance posture, balance and muscle strength. These exercises will often incorporate pulsing arm or leg movements synchronised with controlled breathing.
Reformer Pilates uses a unique piece of equipment, the Reformer, to offer a dynamic and challenging workout. Equipped with springs, pulleys and straps, the Reformer carriage can be adjusted to vary resistance levels to suit your ability.
The exercises in Reformer Pilates provide an intense, full-body workout, although the core remains the primary focus. Much like mat Pilates, the Reformer variant aids in improving balance, flexibility and strength. It also allows for more variation and progression in workouts. You perform exercises in different positions — lying down, standing or even perched on the shoulder blocks. The resistance from the machine adds an extra layer of intensity to the workout, making it suitable if you want to challenge yourself further.
Reformer Pilates involves a narrow bed with a sliding platform, known as a carriage. You can perform very basic to highly advanced movements in a range of positions, with resistance being altered by adding or removing springs.
What is Pilates?
Developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a much newer form of exercise that was initially for rehabilitating injured soldiers. It aims to strengthen the core, stabilise and elongate the spine, and improve overall strength and balance. When we think about its roots, it’s no wonder Pilates is recommended for those with arthritis, back pain and other physical challenges. It’s also an effective way to prevent future issues if you’re already fit and injury-free.
While there are several forms of Pilates — with some using specialised equipment, such as Reformer Pilates — most classes take place on the mat, emphasising small movements and controlled breathing to work the core and pelvic floor. Although the speed and intensity of Pilates classes vary, movement is controlled and builds gradually, making this a safer option for those recovering from injuries or exploring Pilates for the first time.
